The two major differences are; 5.56 can be much higher pressure than SAAMI standard .223 and the distance between the chambered round's bullet and the rifflering is greater for 5.56. If your barrel says .223 then shoot just .223 out of it. If it is stamped 5.56N then you can shoot both out of it. As I stated in another post: Max chamber pressure for 5.56mm NATO spec is 62,366 psi.
